Coir is a fibrous by-product of coconut processing that is reprocessed to form a high quality, consistent media with unique physical and chemical characteristics.  coir is a sustainable, renewable resource.  It will not turn hydrophobic, can hold a stable pH, is slow to break down and will not draw down nitrogen.  Coir is lightweight (approx. 300kg per cubic metre), it has excellent water holding capacity and it can be made disease free.
