Coir

Coir is the fibres from coconut husks. Coir is a clean media, it's free of bacteria and fungal spores.

Coir is used to substitute other medias such as sphagnum moss, peat, vermiculite, etc however it can be used as an additive to potting mixes.

Coir is a very versatile growing media. Depending on it's grade, the water to air ratios is great and it is used commercially by a large group of growers.

Coir is typically used with growing tomatoes, capsicums, cucumbers, beans, gerberas, roses and many other types of crops.

Coir which is also know as 'coco peat' does not break down like normal potting mixes therefore you are able to re-crop using the same media. It is very highly recommended that you clean the media before replanting your next crop.

Coir can come in many different ways:

• Compressed Coir Bales - these are typically 5kg and expand to make 60litres. You can get smaller bales for the home gardener or trials.
• Easyfil Grow Bags - similar to a PB Bag with coir compressed. It expands to create a growing container with the media.
• Coir Grow Bag - these are approximately 1m long bags, you expand the coir inside and cut holes in the PB type bag. Typically used for tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. You can get a few plants per grow bag.
• Seed raising compressed block - this is a fine grade used predominately for growing seedlings.
• Hanging Basket Liners - varying sizes.

Coir is heavily used overseas as a substitute for Peat; this is due to other countries being aware of the environmental issues with mining Peat.

There is one important point; coir can be high in sodium salts as it comes from coconuts that are typically grown by the sea. To ensure that you get rid of the sodium salts prior to planting, you can rinse very well or use Calcium Nitrate to buffer the coir at a rate of 1kg per 1 cubic metre of coir, mix thoroughly before applying to the coir, leave over night and then rinse well in the morning.
